Volunteers needed!

We need volunteers on Saturday the 16th to make shortcake and prepare the strawberries.

Volunteers are also needed early Sunday morning, June 17, for slicing berries and making the whipped cream – and we need LOTS of whipped cream!

If you can join the fun in the kitchen, please contact Kathy Coleman at (541) 929-8116 or send her an email.

Thanks for your help!

A little history

Good Sam, strawberries and Grace Center go way back

Good Sam has a history of strong support for Grace Center, from the early days of the Center’s founding. Maryanne Staton, a retired professional in home economics, has always been a staunch advocate for Grace Center and served on its Board of Directors for many years.

Remember the Strawberry Jubilee?

Some members of our congregation may remember the Strawberry Jubilee at the Corvallis Senior Center; it was a community tradition for a many years. Maryanne coordinated shortcake baking parties, enlisting many volunteers from the Episcopal Church Women (ECW).

“We had seven stations in the church kitchen, and we baked about 600 shortcakes on the day before the Jubilee,” Maryann said. “My husband Warren was a ‘right-hand person.’ He went after the strawberries — we bought them from Green Gable Farms; he also helped us pack the shortcakes and hauled them over to the Senior Center. He was a big help.

“For the shortcake, we got Krusteaz Buttermilk Baking Mix in 60-ounce boxes from Richey’s Market. Krusteaz had a good recipe for shortcake with their mix — until something changed and the shortcake didn’t taste the same. I got in touch with the company and found out they had taken out some of the fat. They sent me a new recipe, and we adapted it, using real butter.”

Good Samaritan volunteers shared the food prep effort with volunteers from other Corvallis churches. Betty Macauley of Grace Lutheran coordinated volunteers to wash, hull and slice the strawberries.

People really enjoyed the Jubilee. There was a kind of neighborliness about it.

Our mini-jubilee on Sunday will be on a smaller scale, but it will be fun and scrumptious. Come to Simpson Hall after either Sunday service and enjoy! Your donations for Grace Center will be gratefully appreciated.
